In addition to our Community Navigation service which help people find out about groups and support locally, The Bureau also provides a number of activities for isolated people in the local community, designed to support their emotional and practical needs. Our activities are delivered by our 100+ fantastic volunteers.
Our services are available to adults in Glossopdale who have difficulty participating in community life or living independently because of disability, poor health or advancing age. Our services includes:
Social Companions – Our volunteers provide one-to-one friendship to help people access social, leisure and educational activities, as well as ‘home from hospital’ support.
Shopping Companions – We arrange community transport and help people to access the shops and local markets, and is run as part of the Time Out social group so people can have a chat and a cuppa as well. We welcome those who are able to make their own way there under their own steam or with the help of friends or family.
Exercise Companions – We provide transport to and from our weekly seated-exercise class every Wednesday at Bradbury House to help people keep fit in a social setting.
Driver Companions – Our volunteer driver companions will take people in their own cars to medical appointments if you are unable to use public transport or taxis. They will also wait with you and bring you home.
Shire Hill Companions – This is our weekly social group held on a Wednesday morning at Shire Hill Hospital and is run entirely by our fantastic Friends of Shire Hill volunteers. It is designed to help people coming out of hospital and signpost them into a range of services and support once they go home.
Computer Companions – Our volunteers provide one-to-one help and support to get to know your phone/tablet/computer and complete the tasks that make life easier.
Call Companions – Our staff and volunteers provide a friendly listening ear in a weekly arranged telephone call.
