Companion Services

In addition to our Community Navigation service which help people find out about groups and support locally, The Bureau also provides a number of activities for isolated people in the local community, designed to support their emotional and practical needs. Our activities are delivered by our 100+ fantastic volunteers.

Our services are available to adults in Glossopdale who have difficulty participating in community life or living independently because of disability, poor health or advancing age. Our services includes:

Befriending Service

Our Social Companion volunteers provide one-to-one friendship to help people access social, leisure and educational activities, as well as ‘home from hospital’ support.

Time Out – social group and support shopping service

Using our community accessible minibus our Shopping Companion volunteers help people to access the shops and local markets, and is run as part a social group so people can have a chat and a cuppa as well. We welcome those who are able to make their own way there under their own steam or with the help of friends or family.

Seated Exercise sessions

Using our community accessible minibus provide transport to and from our weekly seated exercise class every Wednesday at Bradbury House to help people keep fit in a social setting.

Volunteer Car Scheme

Our volunteer Driver Companions will take people in their own cars to accompany you to medical and health-related appointments if you are unable to use public transport or taxis. They will also wait with you and bring you home.

The Thursday Club

This is our weekly social activity group is designed to keep those living with dementia stimulated and active in hobbies and interests that gave them pleasure in the past. These weekly activity session held on a Thursday are run by our wonderful Dementia Companion volunteers. A Dementia Carers Group is run alongside these sessions to provide a space for carers to meet new friends, share experiences or just relax together over a cuppa.

Computer Help

Our Computer Companions volunteers provide one-to-one help and support to get to know your phone/tablet/computer and complete the tasks that make life easier.

Telephone Befriending

Our Coordinator Paul Kiddy and Call Companion volunteers provide a friendly listening ear in a weekly arranged telephone call.
