Best foot forward in face of ‘The Beast from the East’.

Snowy and treacherous weather has hampered the ability of many of Glossopdale’s elderly, disabled and vulnerable residents from accessing social activities, medical appointments and getting to the shops.

Staff and volunteer at Glossop’s community help charity, The Bureau, have been praised by residents for having shown real community spirit. With many of its vital community services affected by the severe weather conditions brought about by The Beast from The East, they have been focusing on contacting vulnerable residents in the area to check that they’re warm and have the necessary food and medication in.

Messages of support and thanks have been flooding into The Bureau via social media, with many locals moved to offer their assistance too.

Damien Greenhalgh, The Bureau’s Partnership and Operations Manager said

We are overwhelmed at the support have received during this cold snap.” Adding “Glossopians are a kind and hardy bunch and our dedicated staff and volunteers are no exception. They been out, largely on foot, in this awful weather delivering food, prescriptions and energy top-up cards. They are a credit to our charity and this town.

Whilst many of The Bureau’s regular community services like their Volunteer Car Scheme which provide transport to medical appointments and its Time Out Social Shopping Service for social isolated residents with mobility issues are suspended they are calling on people to spare a few minutes to check on vulnerable neighbours.
