Stay Connected and Avoid Isolation This Winter

Feeling lonely often causes people to isolate themselves further. They may feel like a burden or are unsure about how to make new connections. Luckily, there’s lots you can do to make friends, have conversations and stay in touch with people.
How can Winter contribute to isolation?
When it’s cold and gloomy outside, many people prefer to stay inside and get cozy in the comfort of their own homes. This can prevent them from going out and meeting friends and family. Shorter days also mean there’s less natural light which can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety. One of the reasons for this is that sunlight helps the body produce more vitamin D which can help improve mood and sleep. With more darkness and temperatures dropping, many people find themselves feeling lonely.
Elderly people and people with disabilities are two groups which are more likely to isolate themselves over the cold months. This could be because of mobility issues, the cold weather can worsen conditions like arthritis, and icy conditions can increase the risk of a fall. Luckily, there’s a lot that people affected by a disability and older people can do to stay connected.
Join a New Group
At The Bureau, we have a whole range of activities to explore in Glossopdale which are either free or ask for a small donation. Whatever your age, interests, or ability, you’ll find something for you on our website. We understand that getting out and about isn’t easy for everyone; we have Call Companions where you can speak to a volunteer for a friendly chat. If you want to make new friends, there are many opportunities to do so. You might join one of our coffee mornings, attend an arts for wellbeing session, or even use our Befriending service. There are many more practical possibilities to explore like chair-based exercise. This is perfect for those who may be recovering from illness, surgery, or are fearful of falling.
When joining a new group, explore what you’re interested in and what works for you. If you want to try something new, go for it – you may discover a new passion! You might be nervous to join a club, but remember that our staff and volunteers work hard to create a sense of community in everything we offer. This makes it easier to meet new people and have conversations.
Try Volunteering!
Volunteering allows you to give back to the community and really change someone’s life. At the same time, it can help improve and widen your skills, as well as broaden your horizons as you learn about the people in your community. If you’re not sure what area to volunteer in, you might choose something you’re interested in or something you’re passionate about. If you love walking and nature, we have opportunities to become a volunteer with one of our many walking groups! If you want to meet new people and make a difference, consider volunteering as a befriender. Explore all your options until you find one that resonates with you, there are so many to explore!
Get a Befriender and maintain connections
Remember that The Bureau can find you a Befriender or a Call Companion. Befrienders can come and visit you at home, or you can meet them for a coffee a short distance from your house. If you are housebound, then a Call Companions call would be ideal. A short check-in and chat over the phone. If you’re feeling up to it, you could attend a coffee morning and try something new! Don’t let winter get you down. Get in touch with The Bureau today.
